Tyler recognized as Tree City USA for 17th consecutive year

Post Date:04/22/2026

For the 17th consecutive year, the Arbor Day Foundation has named the City of Tyler a 2025 Tree City USA, honoring its continued commitment to effective urban forest management.

Tyler earned this national recognition by meeting the program’s four core requirements: maintaining a tree board or department, having a tree care ordinance, allocating at least $2 per capita toward community forestry and holding an official Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

For the tenth year, the city also received the Tree City USA Growth Award. This award recognizes environmental improvement and a higher standard of tree care. Tyler is one of only half of the current Texas Tree Cities to receive this honor.

In 2025, Tyler hosted an Arbor Day Celebration at Lindsey Park, where 73 trees were planted. The City also held a free seedling giveaway in partnership with CHRISTUS Health, providing more than 1,500 seedlings to families for planting. In total, 114 trees were planted on public property.

Properly planted and maintained trees offer numerous long-term benefits. They enhance curb appeal, increase property values, reduce cooling costs, filter pollutants from the air and provide essential habitats for wildlife.

"Earning Tree City USA status for the 17th year in a row and the Growth Award for the tenth is a testament to how deeply this community values its urban forest," said Luke Alfaro, City of Tyler Urban Forester/Arborist. "From our volunteers and partners to city leadership, everyone plays a role in keeping Tyler green, healthy, and beautiful for generations to come."
