Tyler's sales tax is 8.25%. That includes:

• 6.25% for the State of Texas
• 1% for the City of Tyler general fund
• 0.5% for Tyler's Half Cent Sales Tax Fund
• 0.5% for Smith County

The Half Cent sales tax was approved by Tyler voters on November 7, 1995, and provides approximately $20 million annually for the City's capital projects. The Tyler City Council and the Half Cent Sales Tax Board determine how the tax is spent. This fund has allowed the City of Tyler to pay cash for capital projects, rather than using general obligation bonds.
