DESCRIPTION:<p>The City of Tyler will host a ceremony to unveil a new Half Mile of History marker in Downtown Tyler. The marker is part of the Half Mile of History heritage trail and honors<b> </b>the<b> Rotary Club of Tyler </b>(background information below).</p><p><b>When</b>: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 3 p.m., Thursday, May 27, 2021</p><p><b>Where</b>: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Plaza Tower Atrium, 110 North College Avenue, Tyler, TX 75702</p><p><b><u>Background:<br><br></u></b>The City of Tyler’s Half Mile of History program resulted from recommendations that came out of the Tyler 1st Comprehensive Plan. The fifth goal of the Historic Preservation Chapter of the Comprehensive Plan is: </p><p align="center"><i>“Promote and display diverse aspects of Tyler’s history to enhance resident and <br>visitor awareness of its importance.”</i> </p><p>The goal of the Half Mile of History program is to pay tribute to people, places, organizations and events that have contributed to the rich history of Tyler and Smith County.&nbsp;</p><p>The Half Mile of History is a permanent, outdoor, half-mile loop that surrounds the square in the heart of downtown Tyler.&nbsp; Stone markers are placed in the sidewalk along the Half Mile of History to commemorate significant people, places or events. A digital tour is available by either scanning the QR code found on downtown business or visiting <a href="http://www.tylerhistoricpreservation.com/">www.TylerHistoricPreservation.com</a> .</p><p><b>Honoree:</b></p><p><b><u>Rotary Club of Tyler</u></b></p><p>The Rotary Club of Tyler was chartered on May 1, 1920 and the first president was T. H. Shelby. Through the years, the leaders of Tyler became the leaders of the Rotary Club. The Club has supported education by highlighting Outstanding High School Senior Students from area high schools and giving a banquet for Tyler Rotary Young Citizens Club members from Smith County since 1930. The Club has contributed funds and support for all major organizations of Tyler, such as the Literacy Council of Tyler, East Texas Symphony Orchestra, The Texas Rose Festival and Tyler Museum of Art.</p><p>The Rotary Club was nominated to recognize over 100 years of service philanthropic efforts to the Tyler community. </p>
